Many people in this world including me go with the saying its not what you know its who you know...Its the people that you know who help you get those business contacts and how through people making new contacts...Its keeping these contacts what makes it the difficult part of business....
When you say social networking sites people think of the two most famous mysapce and face book....But the truth is that new sites aimed at business employees are popping up every day...New website http://www.linkedin.com/ is one that is new to the social networking scenes...This site lets people search previous companies to find ex-coworkers and rekindle there friendship...It also allows people to search for jobs that companies have posted...But most important the ability to find ex-coworkers and see where they are no providing new insights and possible no possibilities....
Business networking sites are now being used to see how your contacts can be used to find others...When you want to do business with a new company you can now see which of your associates have contact or relationship with that company to give you a heads up...
Social networking sites have really helped business grow...Don't you think?

Seeing the title, I was surprised, because it was exactly same as the topic my friend and I talked about last a couple of days ago.
My friend claimed, and I mostly agreed, that "it's not how talent you are but who recognizes you in succeeding in arts".
That is to say, whatever rough stuff an artist made, if a famous critic, who may know the artist in person, recognize it, that rough stuff becomes a masterpiece.
In that perspective, my friend also said everything is politics.
Do you think sites like LinkedIn have applications outside of true "business" applications? The way I've maintained or even used my contacts are not through websites but are through emails or phone calls. None of them have been members of SNS or are even particularly proficient with using computers (think hunt-and-peck). Maybe that's just a by-product of my field (criminal justice/law) but I do wonder how limited LinkedIn's application is outside of businesses. Your thoughts?
hey george good point....but how i view all these netowrking sites is a way to maintain friends...friends you thought you lost but found again on a site like this...I agree these sites might not be the best way to stay in contact but I view them as a way to start this netowrk...From these sites and the freinds you find then go to the phone/email
Damn, the Internet connection failed just when I tried to upload my comment, and all what I wrote was disappeared! I have to write it again. I hate the connection in library and my cheapest PC in Japan.
The connection with the employees in the company you want to join is very important in Japan. Sometimes you can get the job you want just because of the connection with the senior staffs.
Although business networking sites may be not powerful enough to guarantee you a job now (I tried to find former co-workers, but I could only find one person and he haven't replied my invitation yet), it can be a great tool for both employers and job-seekers in the future.
Connections are very important in business, and really professional life in general. Ryo mentioned that sometimes in Japan, you can get a job simply by knowing a senior officer. In the US, its the same deal. Maybe you don't know the CEO, or even a VP, but maybe you know an intern... I got my internship through a connection in my network. Being able to keep in touch with more people, making a bigger network makes you a stronger person in the eyes of an employer, or may simply make the employer aware of you.
I religiously believe in this saying "its not what you know its who you know." I mean really, if it wasn't for that do you really think GEORGE W. BUSH would've won presidential elections both 2000 and 2004. Also if it wasn't for my aunt at the department of justice I probably wouldn't have got a government internship as easily as i did the one i have now.
Knowing other people through networking and 'building bridges' really helps things progress a lot easier and more efficiently. DON'T YOU THINK?
