are emails really private?

so having www.cnn.com as my homepage when i open my browser really pays off sometimes....So when i got on the Internet tonight i saw a video that was titled Emails could be career enders. (http://www.cnn.com/video/player/player.html?url=/video/business/2007/03/25/intv.office.email.etiquette.cnn&wm=11) I decided to watch this movie and what I found out really relates to this class...Basically real quick what i found out was that emails can be read by more people then you think...This email was more focused on business email accounts but really apply for all email..Emails are stored on giant tapes that can be read by many people down the line years away....This goes along with IMs and any other messages that you send over the Internet..So before you write your next email make sure what you put in it wont get you in trouble at all.

Hi, I'm Yuriko. I think we have to remember that information on the Internet can be seen by someone. It was said that the Internet is basically an anonymous world before, but it is quite doubtful in today’s world. More and more people are getting their “accounts” on the Internet, and started behaving not as “one of them” but as themselves. Rather, social networking service sites recommend us not to be anonymous. I assume that there is no “100% private space” on the Internet.

Good post Jordan, I've actually had a scare involving email at work. It worked out okay but definitely taught me that nothing sent online is private. Especially when using the Internet while at work, it's very helpful to keep in mind that you're using company resources and they do have every right to monitor everything you do. Don't linger too long on non-work related sites, if you visit them at all. And keep your business email business related and your personal email personal (and off the company network).

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that private emails are so much less private than they are. However, when you sign up for an email account there are terms and condition which you agree to (the really long warning and at the end "click here to agree"). I personally do not read every word of that but I am sure if I do it would have stated there in there somewhere that emails can be traced. I know at my internship there is a server hence there will always be big brother watching.

I know one of my friends at work got in trouble for a personal email in the office. Its scary to think that they are all that interested in what we have to say. It can also be an asset that every email is recorded, it covers your tracks because you can look back at your records and see when you sent an email: it is a permantent record that can help you a lot down the road.
